About the Pipe Marker
Pipe markers follow ANSI/ASME A13.1, the standard OSHA inspectors and fire codes expect: the band's color says what's inside — white on green for water, white on red for fire-quenching fluids, black on yellow for flammable and oxidizing fluids, black on orange for toxic and corrosive, white on brown for combustibles, white on blue for compressed air — with the contents spelled out and an arrow for the direction of flow. Letter height and band length grow with the pipe's outside diameter; pick the size class and the builder sets the proportions. Place markers near valves, branches and wall penetrations, and every 25–50 ft along straight runs.
